How to Apply for Temporary (Tourist) Visa to Canada

Contrary to popular belief, there are no tourist visas in Canada. Unlike the United States or Europe, Canada uses what’s called a Temporary Resident Visa. Whether you’re coming to Canada for business, to visit relatives, or simply for pleasure, this is the type of a visa that you need to apply for.

To apply for a temporary resident visa, there are three steps to take.

First of all, you need to prepare proper documents. After that, you need to fill out appropriate forms for a visa application that you can get online on the website of Immigration and Citizenship. And lastly, you need to submit your application online or to apply at the nearest visa center.

There are no specific number of documents that you need in order to apply. You are free to provide as many documents as you need to support your application.

But as a minimum, you’ll need to provide your photo, proof of your tickets or itinerary, a bank statement to confirm you have enough money to support yourself while in the country, and your current passport.

There are three main points that you need to cover if you want to get your application approved. Let’s go over these three points, as well as what to do if you’re having trouble with your application.

Reasons to come to Canada

First of all, you’re going to need to provide a very good reason as to why you want to visit Canada.

90% percent of the time, applicants use visiting Niagara Falls as one of their reasons. Please do not use this cliche. Of course, Niagara is a wonderful region to visit, but it’s best to think of something a bit more tangible and realistic that isn’t used as often.

Maybe you’re a huge fan of hockey and want to visit Toronto to see the Maple Leaf’s play. Maybe you are very religious catholic and you want to visit Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal, QC.

It’s also a good idea, if you have a friend or relative in Canada, to get them to write you an invitation letter confirming that they’re willing to support and accommodate you throughout the duration of your stay.

The next point that you want to focus on is how you’re going to support yourself while you’re visiting Canada.

Sure, it’s great that you have a letter stating that you have friends or relatives to stay with. However, the visa officer is going to want to know that you’re capable of supporting yourself on your own, without the help of anyone else.

Afterall, you’re an adult and what if your friend or relative got sick of you and kicked you out of their house? How would support yourself?

You’re going to need to be able to prove that you have enough money for things such as food and accommodations for the duration of your stay in Canada. r

Reason to go home

Finally, you also need to provide proof that you have a reason to leave Canada and return to your home country, especially if there are any reasons for you to stay, such as wanting to claim refugee status in Canada.

In other words, you need to prove that you have a reason to return home. Whether that’s because you have a wife or husband and children back home. Or, maybe you run a business that would fall apart if you didn’t return.

Whatever the reason, you need to give a visa officer proof that you’re not going to change your mind and decide to stay in the country illegally.
